Far-UVC is gaining important recognition for its potential to make environmental hygiene continuous.

 

In a new major article published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC), William A. Rutala, PhD, MPH, and David J. Weber, MD, MPH state: “Far UV-C light (200-230 nm) likely has the greatest promise as a continuous room decontamination device of the technologies currently available.”

The need for continuous intervention is clear. Among the findings highlighted in the paper:

  • Healthcare-associated microorganisms can persist in the environment for days, and in some cases months.
  • Contact with the environment can be just as likely to contaminate the hands of healthcare personnel as direct contact with a patient.
  • In one multicenter study, 20.5% of sampled room surfaces were contaminated with C. auris or multidrug-resistant organisms within four hours after disinfection.
  • In a hospital burn center, MDR Acinetobacter baumannii recontaminated some surfaces in just 2 to 3 hours after cleaning and disinfection.

Manual cleaning remains essential. But, Far-UVC adds an important supplement that works passively, silently and virtually invisibly in the background.
